Music has taken shifts from generation to generation, but its power and potency have never stayed intact! It has the ability to permeate through the most hardened heart without a single permission.
One generation love hymnals, another love jazz, another love country music. The next generation love reggae, another prefer hip hop. The preference keeps growing as the age and time advances.
One thing that has not changed is the fact that lyrics have outstayed every form and genre of music. Lyrics have built and torn down generations respectively. It has transcended through and through. It is the silent, yet strongest force upon which a song is produced.
Today, it is Afro or better still, Afrobeat music that almost every one wants to employ. It is a beautiful genre of music without any doubt. However, it has come with more focus on the rhythm than on the 'right theme' (lyrics). Afrobeat has the ability to use one simple sentence to send a million message.
Young adults hinge on the simplicity of Afrobeat to do drug, promiscuity and even rascality in the church and even society at large. While we will want to drive in a good message using Afrobeat, we should be VERY conscious to not let concocting idle words pollute a whole generation. I usually say that IF THE LYRICS ARE HEALTHY, THE DANCE AND VIBE WILL BE PURE.
My sincere prayer is that the next generation will be handed musics that are pure, undefiled and transgenerational. Time is short and we must stay awake and use the day well; night is coming really fast. Wake, wake, wake up on lyricists
